Notes On Combining Aliquot Groups

  • Aliquot samples can be automatically created when normal samples are created. Aliquot samples will be created when an order choice has collection information with an aliquot group assigned to it, and the assigned aliquot group contains collection information of its own. Multiple order choices can combine to the same sample, but create different aliquot samples for each order choice when the order choices have different aliquot groups defined, or if they have the same aliquot groups defined, but the setting Aliquot Group is combinable is not set for either order choice.
  • Order choices that combine to the same sample will share the same aliquot samples if all order choices have the same aliquot group and all order choices have the Aliquot Group is combinable setting selected.

If volume-based container count logic is used for the aliquot collection information, then the number of containers required for the aliquot will be calculated by multiplying the minimum required yield for the aliquot by the number of order choices combined to the aliquot, and then dividing by the maximum yield for the tube/container type of the aliquot. Aliquot samples will be created when orders are created in the system (either manually or by ORM HL7 order messages) and when order choices are added or reflexed to an existing order.

Aliquot samples will not be created when orders are created by ORU HL7 result messages or when order choices are added onto an order for document attachments.

  • When aliquot samples are created, they will be assigned an ID by the aliquot ID generation scheme. If the aliquot group's collection information has a suffix set in the collection information, then the suffix will be appended to the end of the ID generated by the aliquot ID generation scheme.
