Microbiology Sample Types

Note

Configurations in this section drive what sample types are available for the specified testing facilities.

  • If the testing facility is set to All, the sample types defined will be available across all testing facilities that do not have a testing facility explicitly defined.
  • If a testing facility is explicitly defined, the sample types defined will be available for the specific testing facility.
  • If none of the testing facilities are set to All, all sample types will be available to all testing facilities that have not been explicitly defined.
AddSelect this button to see options for specifying a testing facility and set of sample types for the order choice.
Testing Facility

Enter text or select in this search-as-you-type field to select a testing facility for the microbiology order choice.

This field defaults to All.

Sample Types

Enter text or select in this search-as-you-type field to select sample types for the microbiology order choice.

Multiple sample type sets can be added to the same order choice as long as the testing facilities do not match.

Adjusting Sample Types also adjusts any required tests designated in the Microbiology Mandatory Tests section on this page.

Microbiology Default Media

Add

Select this button to add a default media section to the order choice.

Each default media section has a unique testing facility.

Testing Facility

Enter text or select in this search-as-you-type field to select a testing facility for the microbiology order choice.

This field defaults to All.

Valid Sample Types

Enter text or select in this search-as-you-type field to select sample types for the microbiology order choice.

The available valid sample types are determined by the sample types selected in the Microbiology Sample Types section with a matching testing facility.

Valid Source Sites

Enter text or select in this search-as-you-type field to select source sites for the microbiology order choice.

Specifying a valid source site determines which default media to add automatically on the Microbiology Media Setup Pop-up. The default media added will be based on the most specific section added to this setup.

Default Media

Default media can be flexed based on the designated specimen type of an order choice (culture). You can set separate default media by specimen type for each facility. This allows the Microbiology Media Setup Pop-up to instantly flex the default media as well as add/remove additional media and make any other necessary changes.

Enter text or select in this search-as-you-type field to select default media for the microbiology order choice.

Note

You can add duplicate default media.

Use the Sort column to sort the list once selections are made.

Select the X button to clear selected media from the list.

Microbiology Culture Abnormal Organisms

Add

Select this button to add an abnormal organisms section to the order choice.

Each abnormal organism section has a unique testing facility/department.

Abnormal Organisms

Enter text or select in this search-as-you-type field to select the organisms that will flag as abnormal or critical when isolated on the selected order choice for the associated testing facilities and/or sample types.

The list of abnormal organisms selected display in a table. At the end of the organism item's row in the table, select the Flag drop-down list to select a culture-level flag for the Microbiology Work Card. This way, you can define targeted organisms per culture as needed. The drop-down options are:

  • A: Abnormal. This is the default.
  • A!: Critical

Whichever you select in the Flag drop-down list will automatically set the Isolate section and culture-level abnormality flags.

Note

Organism designations are hierarchical. This means that if you flag a genus, all species under it will also flag as abnormal.

The abnormal organism flags you configure here will display on the Microbiology Work Card when you add the organism to the work card.

Microbiology Culture Instrument Identifiers

Select this checkbox to make the Result field mandatory.

This causes the mandatory field to be outlined in red for every isolate section added to the Microbiology Work Card Pop-up for the specified microbiology order choice. You must enter results before the isolate workup status for that section can attain a complete status.
