Orchard Software Hardware Specifications Overview

The specifications listed below are minimum recommendations for Orchard Software’s on-premise or client-hosted solution. Additional resources may be required to meet performance expectations, depending upon laboratory volumes and the server or workstation role.

Servers and/or workstations deployed for the Orchard solution may be physical or virtualized. Please note that Orchard Software does not configure, implement, or support the hypervisor environment housing the proposed solutions; however, Orchard Software will support all proposed applications within a hypervisor environment, if laboratory staff chooses to deploy them in a virtualized environment.

If hosting or Software as a Service (SaaS) deployment options are desired, please contact Orchard for more information on our Cloud Service offerings.

Ancillary Hardware

The CLIENT will provide:

  • Block and Slide Printers, as needed
  • Bar Code Scanners, as needed
  • Label Printers, as needed

Orchard will provide:

  • All serial port expansion cards, hubs, and connectors necessary to establish the proposed system network and all interfaces listed in the executed Purchase Agreement and subsequent Statement of Work.
Notes on Hardware Configuration & Deployment
  • An SSD storage array is preferred for any Orchard database server deployment, but may be required for intensive usage systems.
  • Random Access Memory (RAM) must be statically allocated to the workstation and/or server. Orchard’s applications are RAM-intensive. As such, dynamic allocation can, and will, cause issues within the system if it is forced to wait for memory allocation.
  • The number of dedicated workstations for Instrument Interfaces is subject to change based on the number of instrument interfaces deployed.
  • If automated faxing is deployed, a dedicated fax workstation utilizing analog fax lines is required to fax directly from the Orchard application.

Operating System Note

For workstations only: Windows 11 has been validated for only Orchard Harvest 13, Orchard Pathology 13, and Orchard Enterprise Lab 9, and above. To upgrade your Windows operating system, Orchard Software recommends that our users be running Orchard Harvest 13, Orchard Pathology 13, or Orchard Outreach 9.0.211217 and above.

The following diagram depicts the data flow of the Orchard system solution. Please note that this is an example diagram and may not include all components of your deployment.

Database Server

The following specifications are Orchard Software’s recommendation for optimal performance of the system database server.

  • Drive 1 – Operating System = 50 GB minimum
  • Drive 2 – Database Local Storage 200 GB
  • SSD, RAID 1+0, or a fiber connected SAN are recommended
  • Orchard Software recommends starting with a minimum of 200 GB for the database hard drive and monitor the growth of the system to determine if additional allocation is necessary.
  • It is required to have at least one backup file stored locally on the application server. All other backup files may be moved to another drive, storage solution, or off site.

Notes on System Application Server Deployment

  • The system application servers must maintain less than 1ms latency to the database server due to heavy transactional interactions.
  • In a virtual environment, the required memory must be 100% statically allocated or marked as reserved.
  • If automated faxing will be deployed, a physical server is required due to telephony requirements.
  • For any system deployment, you must have a minimum of 3 application servers. Additional system application servers may be deployed for the purposes of scalability to accommodate larger volume organizations. The following metrics should be used when determining how many application servers to deploy:
