Application & Database Server

The following specifications are Orchard Software’s recommendation for optimal performance of the Orchard application/database server.

SpecificationMinimum Requirements
Operating System (OS)Windows Server 2012 R2 SP1, 64-bit or later
Processor Core Allocation (CPU)

(4) 2.0+ GHz

  • Microsoft SQL must be licensed for all available CPU cores
Random Access Memory (RAM)64 GB statically allocated
Hard Drive

250 GB

  • Drive 1 – Operating System = 50 GB minimum
  • Drive 2 – Database Local Storage 200 GB
  • SSD, RAID 1+0, or a fiber connected SAN are recommended
  • Orchard Software recommends starting with a minimum of 200 GB for the database hard drive and monitor the growth of the system to determine if additional allocation is necessary.
  • It is required to have at least one backup file stored locally on the application server. All other backup files may be moved to another drive, storage solution, or off site.
Applications

SQL Server 2012 R2 or newer Standard Edition SP1

  • License required to be provided by CLIENT
Web Servers

The following specifications are Orchard Software’s recommendation for optimal performance of the web servers for the Orchard solution.

SpecificationMinimum Requirements
Operating System (OS)

Windows Server 2012 R2 SP1 64-bit or later

Processor Core Allocation (CPU)

(4) 2.0+ GHz

Random Access Memory (RAM)8 GB statically allocated
Hard Drive

100 GB

Notes on Orchard Web Server Deployment

  • The application web servers must maintain less than 1ms latency to the database server due to heavy transactional interactions.
  • In a virtual environment, the required memory must be 100% statically allocated or marked as reserved.
  • If automated faxing will be deployed, a physical server is required due to telephony requirements.
  • For any Orchard deployment, you must have a minimum of 4 web servers (5 if using automated faxing). Additional Orchard web servers may be deployed for the purposes of scalability to accommodate larger volume organizations. The following metrics should be used when determining how many web servers to deploy:
ServerQuantityPurpose
Web Resource Server1The Resource Web Server controls specific processes for the Sequoia application such as direct printing, remote access printing services (RAPS), HL7 hosts, email, inbox delivery, etc.
HL7 Web Server1Metric: 1 web server per 75 HL7 messages/minute.
User Access Web Server1Metric: 1 web server per 300 concurrent users.
Device/Instrument Interface Web Server1Metric: 1 web server per 75 device instrument result messages/minute.
Optional Faxing Web Server1Only necessary if utilizing automated faxing from Sequoia.
